Can a baby/young tortoise live in a large rodent cage?
Because I can’t afford a large tank, but I have tons of very large rodent cages that I used with my hamsters, they are very big, so, if it has the lighting and heating, can it live in one of those cages?
I don’t have the tortoise yet, I wouldn’t get an animal if i didn’t have proper housing for them. And the reason im asking about a cheaper cage is because im 15, and don’t have a job yet, so I need to save up my money because I have other pets as well
Now, if there was an emergency and the animal needed vet care, my family has money to the side for emergencys like that, so its not that we can’t afford it, because I do have enough money to give it proper care….

If you can offer the species you choose the right temps and humidity in the rodent cage, it will be OK to start.
As a rule, most tortoises want about 80-85f at about 75-80% humidity- which can be tough in an open-air cage.
We also want to give it room- about 100 square inches per inch of shell length- so a 3″ long tortoise would want about a 10″ x 30″ space- a little big for most rodent homes.
Finally, it is very stressful for a tortoise to see through something it cannot walk through- so the lower part of the habitat should not be glass, clear plastic, or open mesh.
