I am looking for advice about cloth diapers… what brands, diaper covers, how expensive will it be, etc.?

I am expecting my third child, but hoping to use cloth diapers for the first time, mostly to save money, but also for the environment. I am planning to wash them myself, hopefully no more than every other day. I have already got the pre-fold diapers from Wal-Mart, but am wondering mostly about diaper pins and diaper covers. Do the Gerber waterproof pants work? I have read that with the diaper cover wraps, you do not have to use pins? Looking at cost, but also best as far as leak-proof. Also, do you know of any stores that carry these or will I have to order everything online? Any advice from anyone experienced in cloth diapering will be appreciated.
I am looking specifically for anyone who has tried pull-up waterproof pants (like Gerber) over pre-fold diapers with pins or snappis. It seems like the cheapest way to go. Did they leak badly? Were they very “poofy” (sticking out a lot) or noisy? And would you recommend pins or snappis?

I used gerber prefolds for almost a year (I am so embarassed to admit). They are basicly one layer of cotton and a bit of quilt batting. They will hold one pee max, but with a gerber cover they won’t leak. So you will need to change OFTEN. I was ECing, so the diaper was only back-up. This is an insane way to diaper. For super cheap diapering prefolds and proraps are the way to go.

Gerber never leaked until you tried to take them off. If there is poop, it gets on the legs when you take them off, pee just runs right out of the cover and they cause painful red marks worse than any other diaper cover available. Yes they are poofy, no they weren’t too noisy. Get dappi covers instead, they are the same price, trimmer, and gentler. Diaper pins aren’t a big deal, but they are time consuming to use. The system I fell in love with is very much like folding a prefold in thirds and laying it in a thirsties wrap. You reuse the cover until there is poop, so you need lots of covers during the newborn stage and only 4-6 from then on. I’ve known three other moms who used proraps and Diaper Service Quality prefolds folded in thirds with no pins (DSQ prefolds are only available online). Also, my friends only ever used small prefolds not premium size since they were trifolding them instead of pinning.
